For Us

For a child has been born – for us!
He’ll take over the running of the world.
His names will be: Amazing Counselor, Strong God, Eternal Father, Prince of Wholeness.
His ruling authority will grow, and there’ll be no limits to the wholeness he brings.

Isaiah 9:6-7 The Message

In the frenzy of last minute shopping, travel madness, family gatherings, sending text messages (2009 marks the death of the Christmas card)… it’s quite easy to miss out on the amazing fact that Christmas underscores. Roundabout 2000 years ago, the Creator personally intervened dramatically in human history. Coming undercover as a harmless baby, His mission was nothing less than total regime change. Those in power then recognized this and did all they could to stop it (they’re still at it!) But God’s authority will only continue to increase (the authority by which Jesus commissioned his followers to spread His influence to the nations) until He brings lasting wholeness to the entire creation. Not just to humanity but every sector of our society.

The most astounding part is that the Creator did this all… for us! God is for us, not against us. His plan is to liberate us from a world that seeks to conform us to a hopeless, self-centered sameness. That’s the foundational truth on which all of life hinges. It’s the red pill/blue pill moment. It’s the hardest truth to wrap your mind around (even for Christ followers) but once you begin to accept it and live it out, your life can never be the same again!

And so at the end of this first decade of the second millennium since that startling event, I wish you a joyful Christmas. May the truth of Christmas set you free to fully become the person that you were created to be.
